.. well almost Tongue

http://torrentfreak.com/rednex-diss-record-labels-partner-with-the-pirate-bay-100107/

As record companies become more and more desperate, the artists are forced to pick a side. Massive lobbies by the record labels convince artists that copyright should be protected, for moral reasons. But more and more artists see that copyright is only upheld for financial profit. We - the fans - have known this for years.

Here's an essay by REDNEX (from the song "Cotton eye Joe")

All aboard! Do what you want cause a pirate is free, you are a pirate!
We're all the PirateBay

The war is already won, but the battle is only just starting Smiley

That's some interesting facts. But I think not many people will follow them to share the music on tpb, especialy record companies and studios. Because they need money to develop they business. I guess there is not much they can do about it anyway. So that was a good news to me, thanks for sharing!

Good move on their part as far as publicity goes. I doubt many others will follow this exact path, but I expect music to have a different future that will begin to show itself this decade.

i'm not a fan of Rednex, but it's a clever move on their part, and the essay is a very interesting read.

As a musician myself, I realise how important copyright is to protect my income and make my choice of career financially viable. (Else I'd never make any money and I couldn't be a musician.) So I don't condone people downloading entire albums off the net. But, I do believe that DRM free online music stores, like iTunes, are the way of the future, and I'll stress DRM free because there's nothing wrong with sharing a few tunes between friends. If they like your stuff, they'll buy your albums.

iTunes has definitely got it right here, at least on the music side. (I'd also like to see DRM removed from the movies as well, but that's a fight with an even stricter industry.) Cheap music which can be used anywhere and on any device, with far more of the profit going to the musicians - not the greedy record companies.

Edit - Not to mention that you can publish your music to iTunes as an independent label - stuff the record companies altogether.

If only it was a band that I'd heard more than one song by (and not at ~11PM on the "top 40 one-hit-wonders" program  Undecided)

I am a musician and I personally give my music away for free. Yes it would be nice to make money doing what I love most but im not into doing what I do just for the money. I like how the indie companies are either giving their music away free as well or giving you the option to pay what you want for their music. Major companies screw over their artists so bad, getting like 1 to 2 dollars for each record they sell. Musicians make most of their money in concert anyways so why not just give the music away for free or let people pay what they want for it?

I give my music away for free because it will give me a better chance to get myself heard. Im not singed by any record label and I just make music IDK how to do master tracks and that cost money that I don't have right now. Hopefully I can get this new album done soon and save up some money to get it mastered and sell my album on bandcamp and let people pay what they feel like, start playing some live shows and such.

I think the same should go for movies as well, most movies make the profit from the box office im sure. Then I bet the people get screwed over on the DvD sales just like the record sales part.  I think were going to see a lot of people going the DIY indie style with movies as well like how NIN and Radiohead released their latest records.  Its nice to see these kinds of things happen and I hope more people start doing it.

very interesting read. i've noticed over the last few months that more and more people from musical artists, programmers and so on, are trying out new ways of getting consumers to pay for their products. those who realize the change that is taking place and act accordingly will be the ones who will benefit in the future.

Shattersphere put their self-titled debut on p2p a few years ago. Normally, I don't go for p2p recommendations (if you like....) but for some reason, I got them, and I was totally blown away. I've been looking for the CD ever since. I doubt if I'd enjoy Rednex as much, but I'll definitely be giving the essay a read.

@Kazzienna
No offense, but I think you should take a fresh look at your argument. How much money have you personally put into making your music? I'd venture to guess you had to purchase your instrument, as well as lessons, maybe some other equipment? Now how much has your music returned financially? If you're lucky, you might have broken even in the cash department, but the time and effort is still in the red. If you make music that people want to hear, and you make it available to them how they want it, they are willing to pay you. Get creative! Cheesy

personally i liked the essay. gave me a good read for 2am Smiley. as for the way the music is shared, it's the way it should be. i will NEVER buy a music cd even from a band i know, if i don't like at least 1/5th of the songs on that album. sure i could buy the album to find out, but if i don't, then i wasted money. downloading (aka to some as STEALING) them, gives potential customers like myself that nice chance of hearing it first. i have no problem supporting an artist provided they make enough songs per album to make it worth the investment. but that's cause if the songs are good, i like to own the cd so i can rip to songs to whatever portable device i place them on, or put them in the stereo and let it play a random cd throughout the weekend. movies (as some were mentioning earlier) are a slightly touchier subject at this moment imo. i do download movies as well, but sometimes, the stores in my area are ridiculously overpriced for way longer than they should be. you can buy them online from places like ebay and whatnot, but you're also looking at shipping and handling and border taxes. it's just a hassle and an irritation. i personally think movies make enough at the box office to support the actors. but hey, that's just my opinion. i only make $11.25 an hour and i have my own place, a wife, kid, bills and all that. so if i can support all that myself, a movie that makes like $10-$15 million in the box office, the actors should be able to support themselves until their next movie if they weren't retarded about their money and needing to own 15 different cars each one costing them like $500,000 each....such responsible role models some of them are Smiley.

/end rant.
